Steady Marketing Beats Perfection Every Time

Image
Do you have a regular marketing habit? I took a poll in our recent Office Hours for the Simplest Marketing Plan, and it turns out… If your answer is “kind of,” you’re in good company. Out of 44 people, only 2 said they’re “religious” about their marketing.  And 16 admitted to not having a habit at all. I’m not surprised - after all, for nearly 40 years I’ve been helping creatives fill their client pipelines. So I know what it takes.  The top reasons you might have a hard time building a marketing habit are: You’re overthinking it You’re not sure “what to say” Your mother told you not to brag 🙂 Underneath all of those “reasons” may be lurking a core fear: That you’ll do it wrong. But marketing works when you do it. Even if you don’t get it “right” every time. And one thing I know for sure: The key to filling up your pipeline with potential clients is having a consistent marketing habit. Even if it’s just a few minutes a day. It’s never about doing anything “perfectly” o...

Learning from your clients with George Dearing

Can one of your clients be your mentor too?  I don't see why not.  There are so many different types of mentoring relationships, some formal, others informal, some paid, others unpaid; some explicit, others you don’t even realize that’s what it was all about until years later!  As a mentor myself, I have a natural bias toward a more formal arrangement with explicit goals and boundaries – since that’s what I offer . That said, in Episode 540 of the Marketing Mentor Podcast , I loved hearing about the informal relationship Georgiana Dearing had early in her career with one of her clients, who mentored her because that was just his nature.  She learned so much through that relationship, which she has since internalized and continues to pass along now in her role as marketing manager of a manufacturer. (And also as one of the expert coaches in my Simplest Marketing Program .) So listen here (and below) and learn.  And if you like what you hear, we’d love it if you write a re...

Twitter Backtracks On Free API Use For Public Services

Image
In the ever-growing list of screwups and backtracks, Twitter is now backtracking on the decision not to exempt free API use for public services. Under Elon Musk’s leadership, Twitter announced it would kill off free access to its API, forcing companies to choose whether or not they want to pay for enterprise access, which starts at $42,000 per month. The National Weather Service (NWS) had requested an exemption and been denied , despite Musk originally saying that bots and accounts providing useful information would be exempted. While it may not seem like a big deal for the NWS not to receive an exemption, the fact is that many users rely on Twitter notifications from NWS accounts for severe weather warnings, leading the NWS to urge people to start relying on other methods. After being panned — and justifiably so — for its decision, Twitter has reversed course. One of the most important use cases for the Twitter API has always been public utility. Verified gov or...

Twitter Circle Bug Displayed Private Tweets to Random Users

Image
Twitter has acknowledged that a bug with Twitter Circle displayed private tweets to random users. Twitter Circle lets users send tweets only to a close “circle” of friends, but the company says a security issue resulted in those tweets being shown to random people, according to 9to5Mac . “In April 2023, a security incident may have allowed users outside of your Twitter Circle to see tweets that should have otherwise been limited to the Circle to which you were posting,” says an email sent by Twitter. “This issue was identified by our security team and immediately fixed so that these tweets were no longer visible outside of your Circle.” The company adds that it remains “committed to protecting the privacy of the people who use our service, and we understand the risks that an incident like this can introduce and we deeply regret this happened.” The issue is simply the latest in an ever-growing list of issues plaguing the company since Elon Musk laid off...

Happy Hanukkah to all of our small business friends! As the holiday season approaches, Hanukkah reminds us to celebrate perseverance and hope. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of Hanukkah messages for small businesses to use in their holiday marketing efforts. Let’s get started!
